Whyte & Brown Review

Whyte & Brown is a chicken restaurant in Carnaby Street. It’s not at all your usual “chicken shop” because the quality of the chicken is essential to Whyte & Brown – free range, and sourced from family run farms in Yorkshire – and restaurant, although very relaxed, aims for casual refinement. I did feel that it was lacking that vibrance that oozes through the other Kingly Court restaurants though.

Inside Whyte & Brown

The service was functional. It wasn’t outstanding or particular friendly, but it got the job done. Now the food.

What we ordered

We ordered curried wings and fried chicken pops for starters. For mains, Amen ordered half roast chicken with mac and cheese, and I ordered roast chicken crispy burger with bbq pulled chicken fries.

Starters

Chicken pops, seaweed mayo

Both starters were decent. We expected the curried wings to be more flavourful or spicy, but it was a tad tame. Amen didn’t enjoy the chicken pops because he thought they were tasteless. I enjoyed it though. I liked the simple flavour and really enjoyed the crunch.

Mains

Black pepper mac & cheese and crispy chicken skins

Amen’s roast chicken was huge and the quality was excellent. It was perfectly roasted as well, but it tasted fairly bland. It seemed to lack seasoning. He wasn’t a fan of the persillade, and it didn’t compliment the roast chicken. It needed some sauce or gravy. The mac & cheese was delicious. Nothing highfalutin about it, just tasty mac & cheese with a bit of crunch from the crispy chicken skin.

BBQ pulled chicken fries

I really enjoyed my roast chicken crispy burger. It was a really good portion and I easily devoured it. I think it’s could be one of the best chicken burgers I’ve had. It wasn’t overly breaded for the right amount of crisp, and it was “juicy” 😂. I wasn’t a fan of the bbq pulled chicken fries. The fries themselves were decent, but the bbq pulled chicken was too sweet.

Dessert!

We ordered the sticky toffee pudding to share.

We didn’t like the pudding. It simply wasn’t sweet or rich enough.

Verdict

Whyte & Brown was an enjoyable experience, although more for me than Amen. It’s a relaxed environment, the service is functional, and the food is good in parts and decent in others. We recommend for casual meals with small and large groups, and lovers of chicken. The brunch menu also looks good. Whyte & Brown is also moderately priced.
