First Impressions – A Wong

We went to A Wong for our Eid Dinner on Friday, and we were really late for our reservation but luckily they were still able to accommodate. I know I wouldn’t hear the last of it from Amen if they didn’t. A Wong is a Chinese restaurant in Pimlico by Andrew Wong. Amen had this booked in for a while, so we definitely could not miss it!

We were led through the restaurant which has two floors, upstairs is fairly bright while downstairs is low lit. The restaurant has their awards displayed clearly and I was sat in clear view of them, so I was excited to eat.

The Menu

There are three menus, the dim sum lunch menu, tasting menu and evening menu. We had the evening a la carte menu which is split into snacks, share, dishes and wok.

Drinks

I asked our waitress to recommend the best cocktails that can be alcohol free, she suggested the Yunnan and Hainan. I liked the Yunnan and Amen liked the Hainan. We didn’t expect that NON ALCOHOLIC cocktails would cost £10 each, which really annoyed us as the alcohol version is only £2 more. We think its way too expensive for essentially ice and fruit juices.

What We Ordered

From ‘snacks’ we had the ‘1000 Chili Chicken’ with snails and Sichaun pepper and from ‘share’ we had the Xian city ‘Lamb Burger’. From ‘dishes’ we had the ‘A WONG’ Dim sum basket regular and pescatarian version. The Crispy chilli caramelised beef tartare and pickled carrots, Gong Bao Chicken with roasted peanuts, chicken wings stuffed with prawns and black bean sauce and the Dong Po slow braised Iberico pork belly.

WOW! That’s a lot. But we are skilled and could handle it.

 The Food

‘1000 Chili Chicken’ with snails and Sichaun pepper
‘1000 Chili Chicken’ with snails and Sichaun pepper

The ‘1000 Chili Chicken’ with snails and Sichaun pepper was delicious. I was only brave enough to have the chicken as it had the sichaun pepper and I’m not a fan of it. But this wasn’t as bad as the Hutong Sichaun Pepper, it was actually a nice – very spicy but nice. Amen really enjoyed the whole dish but thought there wasn’t enough snails – sorry what? Lol, he must be mad.

I ordered the Xian City ‘Lamb Burger’ and Amen was totally shocked. When it came it wasn’t what I expected but we loved it. Essentially you create your own burger!

The Crispy chilli, caramelised beef tartare and pickled carrots was different but really tasty. We both really enjoyed it! This was Amen’s favorite dish and definitely recommends it. He also really enjoyed the Dong Po slow braised Iberico pork belly.

Amen ordered the Chicken wings stuffed with prawns. I tried a little bit and it tasted likemeaty fish – extremely fishy.

My favorite dish was the Gong Bao Chicken with roasted peanuts which I had with steamed rice. I put the rice inside the bowl to mix in with the sauce and it was perfect. I really enjoyed it as the chicken was perfectly succulent and the sauce was spicy.

These were the A Wong Dim Sum Basket (Pescatarian and regular versions). We will be back for the dim sum lunch so we will review it then. But these were delicious, even though I don’t eat fish like that i love all three of mine.

Verdict

A Wong is a Chinese restaurant that incorporates contemporary cooking methods with traditional Chinese cuisine, such as the foam on the Gong Bao Chicken, the caramelised beef and the stylised dim sum. The food is all presented beautifully and most importantly all tasted delicious. We loved every dish that we ordered and there was a lot more we wanted to try. We can’t wait to go back to have more and also try the dim sum lunch menu. The service was perfect. We recommend visiting A Wong for casual dates, groups and a nice dim sum lunch.
