Street Feast | Hawker House | Part Two

This is the second of our series on amazing street food. First was Dinerama (have a read here if you missed it), which is one of the Street Feast locations, and this post is on another Street Feast location, Hawker House in Canada Water.

Little update – Dalston Yard, the first street feast location we ever went to, has now closed, forever (CRIES) 🙁 🙁 :(. Such a sad moment for us, but on the last day of Dalston Yard Amen proposed to me in foodie style. He bought a Beetroot pizza from Born and Raised Pizza (amazing btw) and placed the ring on the pizza. He walked towards me with the biggest smile on his face, and I was so confused as to why, but then out of nowhere he got down on one knee and made me die from shyness in front of everyone lol.

I always told him to not do it in public, but he clearly chose to ignore me. Well, I didn’t even let him get a word out I just jumped on him and freaked out lol. He did manage to ask me and I did say YES, we’ve been engaged for a month now and we are loving every moment of it. So, even though it was the last day of amazing food at Dalston Yard it wasn’t all that bad, I guess ;).

Anyways, back to talking about hawker house and the delicious food. Hawker house is about a 5 minutes walk from Canada Water station (taking the Business Park Exit) and there are always helpful hawker house staff at the station to direct you. There are two levels in Hawker House – the ground level, which is very spacious with communal seating, food stalls, the main bar and a couple smaller bars; and the second level with more bars, comfy seating as well as a pool table.

Okay, so the food! Hawker House has 12 stalls making it really hard to choose what to eat. I’ll be honest there are a few stalls that I never try and I don’t think I ever will. But I’ll just let you know our favourites.

Traders

White Men Can’t Jerk

They have a jerk chicken meal, which comes with rice & peas and some sauces (I tried this once last year and its okay), ‘Wing Ting’ which is a portion of jerk wings with a few sauces, and the jerk chicken bun (which I really cant wait to try the next time we go). We always get Jerk Boneless Chicken Skewers, which is actually not an option on the menu, but the guys at WMCJ are always happy to accommodate. We have this with Petare’s Plantain…

Petare

We’ve never had Venezuelan food before, but after Petare we only have high expectations and can’t wait to try more. So yes, the plantain is amazing! Not oily and perfectly sweet – they top it off with avocado and cheese but we always ask them to make it without. The arepas which is traditional Venezuelan Cornbread made with 100% corn flour is stuffed with beef, chicken, or a vegetarian option. I’ve only had the chicken, which is amazingly tasty. I definitely recommend it! We have tried another Arepas place since Petare and they don’t even come close.

Rola Wala

An Indian street food vendor cooking up delicious naan sliders topped off with Pork, Chicken or a Veggie option. Whatever else you have just make sure you leave room for rola wala as its one of the best things you will ever try! It’s so tasty with a lot of flavour. I’ve had the Kashmiri Chicken Tikka countless of times; I recommend you go with the chicken and I’ve also tried the Spicy Keralan Dal, if you’re a vegetarian or just like to eat veggie food (like me) then this naan slider will not disappoint.

Mother Clucker

Okay, so the last time we were in Hawker House I tried the ‘Cluckwich’ for the first time. I have no idea what took me so long as its absolutely delicious. The fried chicken is perfect and succulent, not too fried or overly battered. It’s a little messy to eat, but who cares when it tastes that good! With some fries, it’s the perfect meal! Beware, its filling so if you want to try a few other places make sure you’re super hungry.

Hotbox

Only Amen has had this and he loves it. If you read our previous posts you will know I also love Hotbox but this menu only consist of pork ribs, beef ribs, beef brisket bun and chicken thighs as a special. As opposed to his usual preference of beef rib over pork ribs, here in hotbox he much prefers the pork ribs, and that’s not saying the beef ribs aren’t good either. (Perhaps its because the pork is marinated in scotch bonnet chillies so its spicy and Amen LOVES his spice).

Born & Raised

Born & Raised is special to us now and not just because I love pizza very much but as I mentioned Amen popped the question with a delicious pizza from here. They have cute, mini pizza sliders that make me feel slightly better eating it without Amen judging me lol. Although, he does love the sommerset goats cheese, which has a beetroot infused sourdough base (that’s the proposal pizza!) – tastes nice too. I’m not a fan of beetroot on its own but with the pizza it’s not bad.

Chin Chin Labs

The first time we ever tried chin chin labs was at Dalston Yard and we’ve loved it ever since, we even went to the store in Camden. So this last time at Hawker House I decided to go for the Hot Chocolate with warm mashmallows as well as the Sticky Toffee Pudding with vanilla Nitro Ice-cream. Amen had the cheesecake nitro ice cram with warm caramel sauce. The hot chocolate wasn’t what I expected – it was literally melted chocolate and bruleed marshmallows, but I wanted a hot chocolate drink lol.

The best thing was the warm cake in the sticky toffee pudding; it was simply amazing. I was dreaming about it the next day and can’t wait to have it again. Amen loved it too and he sure helped me eat it, not that I needed help! Lol. They also do a thing where they make a sandwich with cookies and ice cream! DELICIOUS, that was the first thing we ever had.

Other food trucks are Yum Bun (which is really popular btw, and we wrote about in the Dinerama post), and Farang, Up in my grill, Prawnography, and Club Mexicana, all which we haven’t tried.

Verdict

Writing this is really making me think about going again this weekend but we might just give it a miss…only for a week though! If you are ever stuck on where to go out on a date, with the girls or lads, group of friends, work mates, family, basically whatever the occasion, then Hawker House is the spot! Has a bit of everything for everyone and its just a cool place so don’t miss out on great food & vibes! Oh its also family friendly & warm as its in a closed warehouse with heating. So no excuses :)!!
